ANIMAL CARE SPECIALTIES - pre-requisite for Veterinary Assistant
Provides entry-level job skills for the animal care industry. Students that pass the class may continue with the medically oriented Veterinary Assistant class in the Spring. Instruction includes medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology, infectious diseases, handling, and restraint, medicating and grooming, surgical preparation, safety, and other topics. Potential students should have an interest in a career that involves working with companion animals. This class is an exploration of the many job opportunities in the field of animal care. Students are encouraged to complete a minimum of 60 hours of on-the-job experience. A certificate of competency is awarded to the student on completion of the course.
 
VETERINARY ASSISTING TECHNOLOGY - pre-requisite for Veterinary Technician
Provides additional medical job skills for the animal care industry.
Instruction includes radiology, anesthesia, hematology, urinalysis, dentistry,
pharmacology, and parasitology. General introduction of lab animal/pocket
pets, equine, avian, and reptiles are explored. Students are encouraged to
complete a minimum of 60 hours of on-the-job experience.
A certificate of competency is awarded upon completion of the course. This course pre-qualifies you for the Veterinary Technician program at Community Colleges such as San Diego Mesa College.
